Beck’s Odelay Turns 30: Looking Back at the Album That Changed Alternative Rock

Thirty years after its release, Beck’s Odelay is still considered one of the defining albums of the 1990s. Back in ’96, Beck was best known for “Loser,” and plenty of people wondered if he’d be remembered as a one-hit wonder. Then Odelay arrived and changed the conversation completely.

Working with production duo The Dust Brothers, Beck put together a record that seemed to pull inspiration from everywhere. Rock, hip-hop, folk, funk, psychedelia, country – and you can hear it all woven together through clever songwriting and an endless supply of samples.

The accolades followed quickly, with Odelay earning a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year and winning Best Alternative Music Album.

Three decades later, Odelay still sounds fresh, surprising, and impossible to pin down.

Not bad for an album that refused to stay in just one lane.
