Ongoing History Daily: Weird albums alert (part 1)

Vinyl records are released in cardboard sleeves. CDs come in plastic cases, as do cassettes. How else could you package a record?

An artist called Bernholz released a 2026 album entitled How Things Are Made. Not only is the music on an SD card, but it’s encased inside a plaster box. If you want to hear the album, you have to destroy the packaging.

In September 2026, Thom Yorke released new material via a torrent. It’s called Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, and to hear it, you’ll need to pay BitTorrent six dollars. For that, you get eight songs and a music video.

The Aphex Twin went one step further. He released a record called Syro, and the only way you could get it was on the dark web using a .onion domain and a Tor browser. Or how about this: an anthology entitled Girl Group Sounds: One Kiss Can Lead to Another can be yours for $269. It comes in a fake hat box. But we can get even weirder.

More next time.
