Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (17 Aug 2026)

I know, I know. We still have weeks of summer to go, but the Five Songs You Must Hear list must contend with the fact that we need to be talking about fall album releases. Here are some singles to get you prepared.

1.Tricky, I’m Yours feat. Mitch Sanders
Different When Silent (False Idols)
Recommended If You Like: The sons of trip-hop

Tricky, the one-time member of Massive Attack and all-round trip-hop pioneer, released this intriguing single from his 15th album, which he dropped last month. Vocalist Mitch Sanders is a fellow Bristolite who provides a little light to Tricky’s darkness. This one is a bit unsettling, so beware of listening alone in the dark.

2. Beck, In the Night
Ride Lonesome (Capitol)
RIYL: Mellow gold filtered through a sea change

Beck has gone very mellow again by releasing what he calls the “spiritual successor” to his easy-going Sea Change album from 2002. Ride Lonesome (due September 18 and his first since Hyperspace in 2019) has so far delivered two hypnotizing singles. I cant wait to hear the whole thing.

3. Blondshell, Violins
Violins (Partisan Records)
RIYL: Shoegaze vibes

Blondshell (Sabrina Mae Teitelbaum) is an LA-based New Yorker who grew up on a diet of Beatles, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Velvet Undeground, Patti Smith, Elliott Smith, Feist, and PJ Harvey. Sounds pretty nutritious to me. I’m really looking forward the release of her third album on September 25.

4. Westside Cowboy, Pin Up Boys
It Goes On (Island)
RIYL: Manchester music

What if Mumford & Sons put down the banjo and got a little more electric with their guitars? Then the result might be Westside Cowboy, the three-year-old band from Manchester. If you’re into groups like Geese and kinda like the vocal delivery of Counting Crows, then you need to give this a listen.

5. The Big Moon, Gravity
Forever (Fiction)
RIYL: Songs about fragility

The Big Moon is an all-woman quartet from London that’s about to release their fourth album, which is due on October 30. If you’re looking for someone to articulate the fragility of life, this might be your record. Something to keep in mind: frontwoman Juliette Jackson suffered from a cholesteatoma, a benign but nevertheless cyst inside the eardrum. It was removed with surgery, but she permanently lost most of her hearing in that ear.
