Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (01 June 2026)

A new week and a new month calls for new tunes. This Five Songs You Must Hear list includes some serious heaviness along with the kind of music only Broken Social Scene can make.

1. Les Shirley, PLAYER2
Hail Mary (Duprince)
Recommended If You Like: Women Who Rock

Some of the fiercest music being made these days (especially Canada) is coming from women. Montreal’s Les Shirley continues to rock really, really hard, and I’m looking forward to their second album, which is due on September 25. (Yes, we’re already talking about early fall releases.) They’ve already shared stages with Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Green Day, Weezer, Billy Talent, and more. They’ll get more gigs out of this.

2. Saint Agnes, Songs for Mia
Your God Fearing Days are About to Begin (Spinefarm Records)
RIYL: Threatening titles

There’s plenty of buzz about this UK and their third album because of the way they’re putting new life into Goth and its accompanying mythology. Looking for tales of vampires, demons, devils, gods, witches, and other malevolent creatures? Think Garbage, but way more grisly, horrific, and ghastly. Love it.

3. BABYMETAL, from me to u (Jordan Fish remix)
METAL FORTH (Capitol Records)
RIYL: Moppet metal

I will never, ever apologize for liking BABYMETAL. With a deluxe edition of the METAL FORTH album coming on June 26 and a tour with Halestorm and Violent Vira in September, they’re giving fans more of what they want. If you really want to demonstrate your devotion, get the vinyl zoetrope version. You won’t be disappointed at how things come to life.

4. Tom Morello, Adjourn It
Single (Mom + Pop Records)
RIYL: Anti-fascist rock

This is outstanding, something you’ll want to play in the car very, very loud, and is a sample of a solo album that’s apparently coming very soon. Damn, if this is what Tom Morello is doing on his own (well, with Serj Tankian of System of a Down and his son Ronnie), what would a full Rage Against the Machine sound like in the era of Trump? Note that the video features clips of a 1954 film entitled Salt of the Earth, which tells on the true story of Mexican-American miners getting screwed over by corporate interests. Still works.

Broken Social Scene feat. Hannah Georgas, Only the Good I Keep
Remember the Humans (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Well, it’s BSS, innit?

I had a nice hang with Brendan and Kevin last week at an event where they were invited to play at a really cool private event, where they talked about why it took nine years to make this album. This All The Feelings tour with Metric and Stars that begins next month is gonna be killer. If you’re in Toronto, did you catch the billboards put up by Amazon and Spotify?
