New singles dominate New Music Friday this week with a couple of big names dropping new material. But stick around for three new albums, especially if you’re a Radiohead fan.
Singles
1. Cigarettes After Sex, Twizzler (Partisan Records)
We’ll start with some American dream pop with El Paso’s Cigarettes After Sex (lovely music; not crazy about the name). There’s no sign of a new album yet, but given that this is the second non-album single in the last year, they’re most likely working towards that fourth record. They’ve been doing well, too, with several of their songs being streamed over one billion (and in one case, two billion) times on Spotify.
2. Foo Fighters, Of All People (Roswell/RCA)
For the first time in forever, a Foo Fighters album didn’t debut in the Top 10 on the Billboard charts, so they find themselves having to make up some ground. The new single from Your Favourite Toy barely breaks two-and-a-half minutes. Dave insisted that the video have something to do with snowless skiing. I quote: “It’s either the gnarliest extreme sport I’ve ever seen, the most fun anyone can have before a guaranteed trip to the hospital, or both. It’s an honor to be the soundtrack to this madness.”
3. The Hyphen Code, Saviour (Coady./The Hyphen Code)
The Hyphen Code (est. Comox, BC) is barely a year old. Founded by guitarist and songwriter Jasson Thiffault (yes, I spelled his name correctly) and lyricist/vocalist Kim Heppell. Brian Howes, a Grammy Award-winning producer (he’s also worked with Nickelback and Simple Plan) helped shape things for this single. Also appearing is Tavis Stanley (yes, it’s “Tavis”) of Art of Dying on guitar, Mike Young of Mother Mother on bass, and drummer Robin Diaz (formerly of Daughtry.)
4. The Hu, Lost Soul (Better Noise Music)
The world’s biggest Mongolian metal band (name another, I dare you) will soon released their first full album, Hun, on July 24. As we’ve seen before The Hu know how to combine metal with Mongolian chanting, throat singing, and more.
5. The Inspiral Carpets, Drag the Bag (Mute)
Yes, them! The one-time members of Madchester royalty are back with their first single in twelve years, and it’s pretty anthemic. We haven’t heard anything from them since a self-titled album in 2014. Will there be more new music? The band is about to go on a summer tour, so I suppose we’ll find out. Cool as f**k, yeah?
6. Muse, Hexagons (Warner)
The next Muse album, the intriguingly titled The WOW! Signal, is set for release on June 26. (Google “wow signal” and you see that Matt Bellamy is still space-mad.) From the first nansecond, your reaction will be “Oh, this is a song from Muse.” It goes on to be pretty epic with lyrics like “Reach out, touch me/ Draw me from the sixth dimension.” We’re with you, Matt.
Albums
1. The Band CAMINO, Never Always (Vol. 2) (Atlantic)
Here’s the fourth album from this Nashville-based rock band. If you like a little electro with your indie, then you should give this a try.
2. Bleachers, everyone for ten minutes (Dirty Hit)
When he’s not co-writing songs and producing albums for Taylor Swift, Lorde, St. Vincent, Pink, Lana Del Rey, Sia, Kendrick Lamar, Tegan and Sara, Carly Rae Jepson, Olivia Rodrigo, Florence and the Machine, The 1975, Panic! at the Disco, and a million others, he makes music for himself and his band Bleachers. They’re now up to five albums.
3. Ed O’Brien, Blue Morpho (Transgressive)
There’s still no sign of new Radiohead music, but at least we have a very Radiohead-like album from guitarist Ed O’Brien. His second solo outing is certainly Radiohead-ish in a Kid A way. That’s a good thing. Let’s chill.
