Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (04 May 2026)

Out of all of the songs on this week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list, there’s only one that might twig some recognition. The rest will probably be brand new to you. But that’s what music discovery is all about, isn’t it?

1. Kim Gordon, PLAY ME
Play Me (Matador)
Recommended If You Like: Sonic Youth, obviously

This album might just end up on some best-of lists in December. Kim Gordon, late of Sonic Youth, has a record that I’ve found myself listening to repeatedly because of its intensity and rawness. Gordon combines trip-hop, industrial, and even trap sounds throughout the album. Don’t miss this one.

2. CEVILIAN, o’dear
Single (Independent)
RIYL: An “alt-metal boy band.”

CEVILIAN (I have a feeling they based their name on the original name of Rage Against the Machine) was formed in Ottawa in 2019 and has built a rep of one of the city’s fiercest bands. Fans include Finger Eleven, Danko Jones, Crown Lands, and Coheed & Cambria. The label “your favourite alt-rock boy band” is something they came up with themselves.

3. Sundayclub, Camera Shy
SUNDAYCLUB (Paper Bag)
RIYL: “Dreamy, gut-punch pop”

Sundaytclub is a duo out of Winnipeg who is getting some interesting attention around the world, including the UK. Yes, their sound is dreamy, fuzzy, and there is a gut-punch element to it. Their self-titled album will be out July 10. Watch them.

4. General Chaos, Busted
Can’t Please ‘Em All (Stomp Records)
RIYL: Knowing that the kids are all right

General Chaos is a three-piece punk band out of Montreal that is in the midst of promoting their second album. What’s this about kids not wanting to rock, preferring to make AI music on their phones? These guys carry the torch of Rancid, Green Day, The Descendents, Green Day, and Propaghandi. What else could you wish for? Here’s where I mention that everyone in the band is just 16. The album will be out Friday.

5. Mary in the Junkyard, Crash Landing
Role Model Hermit (AMF Records)
RIYL: Music for getting over a bad relationship

This is super-dreamy stuff that began when the London UK trio “fell in love with the warm, low drones of the harmonium.” That translated into a pretty slinky bassline. The buzz is building on these women, so expect to hear a lot more by the time their debut comes out on July 3.
