There’s a strong connection between Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and REM that goes back decades. Think of it as a mutual admiration society that turned into a friendship. In fact, when guitarist Peter Buck moved to Seattle, he was neighbours with Kurt and Courtney.
When Kurt died, Michael Stipe wrote a song about him called “Let Me In” on the Monster album from 1994, which channeled his angst at not being able to help him. Two more songs on that album, “Country Feedback” and “Crush with Eyeliner,” were allegedly written about Courtney.
REM has never confirmed that, but if you listen to the lyrics carefully, you can see why this theory has endured.
