Not just five songs you must hear this week, but five bloody essential tracks. You’ll want to share these with everyone you know. Trust me.
1. Untitled, Restless
Human Nature (Pirate Ship Records)
Recommended If You Like: The idea of youth rising up to rock
If you’re old enough, you might remember being thrilled by Silverchair’s first album. “These guys just in their mid-teens? Wow!” Well, here comes that feeling again via Untitled, a group of four 17-year-olds from California who sound as world-weary as Kurt Cobain at his world-weariest. They released this song back in November and have so far racked up one billion views on TikTok, putting them in the top 0.002% of all rock records. They already have 2.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify. This makes it the fastest-growing rock song in the world right now.
2. Deadletter, It Comes Creeping
Existence is Bliss (Universal)
RIYL: Up-and-coming Brits
Deadletter is a six-person musical collective from Yorkshire headed up by a guy named Cameron Miller. I’m not sure how to categorize them. Post-punk, definitely. Art-rock? Possibly. Dance-punk? I can see it. Goth? A stretch, maybe, but not from the look of the video that was shot in a cemetery. Whatever the case, they’ve got a sound that sticks out, something that becomes increasingly hard with each passing year. The album arrived on February 27.
3. The Warning, Kerosene
Single (Universal)
RIYL: Women who rock
The all-sister trio, Dany, Pau, and Ale, burst out of Monterey, Mexico, in 2022 and have since toured the world with Yungblud, Muse, Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, Royal Blood, Three Days Grace, The Pretty Reckless, and Imagine Dragons as well as appearing at big festivals like Lollapalooza. They rock—and HARD. They’re right out of a Robert Rodriguez grindhouse movie.
4. New Pornographers, Spooky Action
The Former Site Of (Merge)
RIYL: Canadian indie rock royalty
After more than 20 years, New Pornographers still sound fresh thanks to a power-pop meets brains approach. This song is a perfect example. Leader Carl Newman drew inspiration from the Cassini-Huygens mission, a NASA satellite exploration of Saturn that lasted 13 years before it was sent spiralling into the planet. It’s all there in the video. Normal stuff, right? This album, their tenth, will arrive on March 27.
5. Jehnny Beth and Mike Patton, Look at Me
Single (Matador)
RIYL: Cool Collaborations
Jehnny (born in France, based in London) is an alum of the band Savages, a group she says was massively influenced by Faith No More. When she got a chance to work with FNM’s Mike Patton, it was a no-brainer. Yes, the video was inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 1976 movie, Taxi Driver. She adds Mike to her list of cool collaborations, which include Noel Gallagher, Julian Casablancas, Gorillaz, and many others.
