Ongoing History Daily: No drug dealer, no gig

I’ve heard a couple of stories over the years about artists who will refuse to go onstage until they’ve had their—ahem—medicine. One of them has to do with Al Jourgensen of Ministry.

Back in the 90s, he and the band consumed a lot of drugs, specifically and enthusiastically, heroin. Looking back, everyone admits they were hardcore junkies. In 1996, Ministry was on tour behind their Filth Pig album and was set to play a gig in Nottingham in the UK. Al refused to start the show until he got his fix.

It was really hot in the Rock City venue, and fans were forced to wait for hours. Then they got fed up and started to tear the place apart. Fortunately for security, they were able to maintain control until the band finally started playing at around 2 am. Somehow, they made it through a 13-song set.

The good news is that Al has been clean for years. He still can’t believe how he once behaved.
