Ongoing History Daily: The first internet concert

Techy trivia question. Over the last 25 years, tons of bands have broadcast live concerts over the internet. But who had the first live Internet concert? Some claim it was the Rolling Stones.  Maybe.  They sent out twenty minutes of a show online on November 18, 1994, at a whopping ten frames per second.  But they were NOT the first.

The answer seems to be Severe Tire Damage.  Never heard of them?  I’m not surprised—because this group consisted of a bunch of scientists from Apple and Xerox who decided that they’d combine their day jobs with music.  Their online concert was in June 1993, almost 18 months earlier.

They were followed a little while later by a band called Deth Specula on August 23, 1994.  The third band was Sky Cries Mary from Seattle. Their Internet set was broadcast on November 11, 1994, a full week before the Stones.
