Inside Greta Van Fleet: Jake Kiszka Shares the Band’s Origin Story

In this 2018 most-watched interview, Jake Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet shares how the band came together. “We were all in that room,” he says, “with the loud amplifiers and, you know, with a pretty loud drum kit, in a small room, all cement, and I think Josh had to kinda get over that volume-wise.”

“Does that explain his vocal technique?” asks interviewer Alan Cross.

“Yeah,” answers Kiszka. He goes on to tell that when the band first heard Jake’s voice, they all knew right away that something was there.

He credits this moment, plus their early exposure to a wide variety of soulful music, with creating their signature sound.

Cross suggests that their new take on an old sound is an education for the younger generation of music lovers. “We feel that it’s our job to take it where it was or where it conspired, in different places,” Kiszka responds.

And just like that, rock history was quietly learning to speak in a new, loud, and very soulful voice.
