The Surprising Side of Sarah McLachlan You Didn’t Expect and What Drives Her Music

Sarah McLachlan doesn’t usually listen back to her own music. However, in a recent interview with Corus Radio morning show hosts Tucker and Maura, they gave her a chance to sit back and enjoy her songs as they listened together.

“You say this is a joyful album? But it feels heavy too,” remarks Maura.

“It is,” says Sarah. “But you know, for me, songwriting is so incredibly cathartic, and it’s working through all of these, you know, my life’s challenges, the struggles, the grief, the pain, the loss, but also the joy.”

This explains the versatility of her work: the wide range of emotions she explores creates so many layers of feeling in her music – even for Sarah, who sees herself as a naturally “light, happy person.”

“Every once in a while, I gotta try to write about something happy!” she says, explaining that we all have our moments, but hers are documented in song.

Today, Sarah is on the 30th Anniversary Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Tour, with 17 dates across Canada. It will be followed by her Better Broken U.S. tour in November.

Her new album of the same name is out now.
