Sloan's Patrick Pentland Discusses Band’s One-of-a-Kind Dynamic Ahead of Album Release

“If you love everything Sloan has done so far, you’re gonna like this!” says host Liz Gogol.
Ahead of the release of their new album, Based on the Best Seller, band member Patrick Pentland sat down with Gogol and explained how the record maintains Sloan’s signature sound while standing out for a few key reasons: each member writes and arranges their own songs, they all play different instruments, and there is no single lead singer. “That’s what we do,” he says. “It is unique and it’s tricky…I’ve often felt having multiple singers hurt us in the short term, in the earlier days…it’s tough to promote a band that has more than one singer.”

At times, this created tension. One member might write a song, but the label would push to have someone else act as the frontman. While Pentland admits not everyone feels compelled to be the ‘star’ at the same time, no one wants to be overlooked. Their solution? They took control of the narrative. Pentland explains, “You just tell everybody that it’s amazing that four of us sing and write and then everybody believes it!”

With their 14th release on the horizon, it’s safe to say: we all believe in Sloan.

Based on the Best Seller is out September 26.
