New Music Friday: 7 releases for the first weekend of July (04 July 2025)

It’s a bit of an odd week given that America is off celebrating July 4 on this New Music Friday. Still, we have things we need to cover, even if it means just looking at one new album.

Singles

1a. Foo Fighters, I Don’t Wanna Hear It (Roswell)

The Foo Fighters are still without a permanent drummer, but the band wanted to do something to celebrate their 30th anniversary. That comes in the form of a cover of a Minor Threat song from 1981. The instrumentation for this record was actually recorded back in 1995. Dave just dropped in vocals recently. This should mean some nice royalties for Ian MacKaye.

1b. Foo Fighters, Today’s Song (Roswell/RCA)

The Foo Fighters haven’t released anything new since 2023. Not surprising, given Dave’s baby mama situation and the lack of a permanent drummer now that Josh Freese is no longer part of the picture. But with the band’s 30th anniversary upon us, they had to do something. So they did. This seems to have been done in such complete secrecy that even their record company was surprised.

2. Of Monsters and Men, Television Love (Republic)

After five years of relative silence, Of Monsters and Men have returned with a song written in their studio in Iceland. This is just the tip of the iceberg, with apparently much more to come. Meanwhile, have a look at the video, which was shot on 35 mm film.

3. Bloody Hare Studio, She (Independent)

This is a project of John Comyns who has created an animated 12-chapter series entitled Hare from Bloody Hare Studio, which will be out this fall. Each chapter will end with an original song.

4. Men Without Hats, I ❤️ the ‘80s (Independent)

Yes, THAT Men Without Hats, which has been touring steadily for the past couple of years. If you miss boomboxes, moonwalking, tube tops, keytars, and all the other things that made the 80s the 80s, then pay attention to all the pop culture references in this new single.

5. X Ambassadors, Unsteady (Rerecorded) (Interscope)

Of Monsters and Men’s debut album, VHS, came out a decade ago. During that time, the band has apparently developed some reservations about the material. Or maybe they just decided to have some fun with their older music. The result is one of those “re-imagined” records where a band goes back into an album and redoes it. VHS(X) will be available on August 29. Here’s the first sample of what to expect.

Albums

1. Claudia  Brücken, Night Mirror (Edsel/Demon Music Group)

If you’re a child of the eighties, you’ll remember Propaganda, the great Fairlight-lovin’ synth-pop German band. Claudia was their lead singer. There have been many releases from her (including some from a band called xPropaganda). This is her fourth proper solo album.
