Gloria was originally recorded by Van Morrison and Them, A decade later, a poet caught up in the early days of NYC punk covered it for her Horses album in 1975. The provocative opening–“Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine”–immediately grabbed your attention.
Hang on, This wasn’t exactly a cover. It was a hybrid of the Them track and a poem Patti wrote called Oath. When she and her band played it live, the two songs organically came together as one. All these years later, this is still powerful stuff.
