Ongoing History Daily: Domestic music quotas

Here in Canada, it’s the law that radio stations have to devote at least 35% of their playlist to Canadian music. The licenses of other stations state a quota of 40%. Do any other countries do the same sort of thing? Quite a few.

In Australia, the number is 25%. France, South Africa and South Korea all require 40% domestic music. Malaysia’s level is 60% while in Brazil, 70% of the music played on the radio must be by Brazilian artists.

But even that’s not the highest quota. In Nigeria, a full 80% of all music on the radio must be local.
