Every have one of those weeks when you encounter so much good music you don’t know what to listen first? That happened to me last week. which made it hard to narrow things down for the Five Songs list this week. Don’t worry, though. I’ve made notes of all the great songs I couldn’t include here. Stand by.
1. Panic Shack, Gok Wan
Single (Independent)
Recommended If You Like: Brutal honesty
When I first heard the title of this song, I thought it referred to something Asian. Nope. This is an all-female Welsh group formed in 2018 and with a few singles to their name. This song tackles body image issues head-on. The title is taken from a British TV show called How to Look Good Naked from the 00’s that would never be acceptable in today’s body-positive world.
2. Perfume Genius feat. Aldous Harding, No Front Teeth
Glory (Matador)
RIYL: The feeling that comes with a great musical discovery
Do you ever have an experience where a great song comes on and you drop what you’re doing to stare at the speakers? That’s what happened to me with my first listen to No Front Teeth, a single from Perfume Genius (aka Michael Hadreas of Des Moine, Iowa). Come for the melody and stay for the dramatic vocal performances and tasteful (and loud!) chord channels. One of my favourites of 2025, for sure.
3. Marie Davidson, Fun Times
City of Clowns (Deewee)
RIYL: 80s alternative dance
If you didn’t look at a calendar, you’d swear that this single from Montreal electronic musician Marie Davidson had created a wormhole that sucked everyone back to 1984. The production, drums, and synth sounds align perfectly with an era that once burst with alt-dance tracks.
4. Model/Actriz, Cinderella
Pirouette (True Panther/Dirty Hit)
RIYL: Unbearable tension
This is one of the most jittery songs I’ve heard in a while. It’s filled with vulnerability and anxiety. Wait until you get to the part in the lyrics about the Cinderella birthday party that singer Cole Haden had to endure when he was five. That must have been brutal.
5. Jack Black and Dave Grohl, I Feel Alive
A Minecraft Movie (Warner)
RIYL: Video games, obviously.
What’s happening with Tenacious D since that weird bustup in Australia last year? No idea. But Jack Black does have a new movie coming based on Minecraft. This song from the soundtrack features Dave Grohl along with Troy Van Leewuen (Queens of the Stone Age) Ozzy Osbourne’s producer, and Mark Mothersbaugh from DevoW. The result is something right out of 1985—or maybe from a 2026 Darkness album.
