Ongoing History Daily: The violent side of Michael Hutchence

Michael Hutchence of INXS was one of the most charismatic frontmen in of the 80s and early 90s, but the man did have his problems. He had issues with alcohol, drugs, and relationships which saw his personality become more volatile over the years.

But in 1992, he got into a fight one late night in Copenhagen where he hit his head on the pavement. He was never the same after that, turning into an erratic, angry, and aggressive person. Hutchence would fly into rages, destroying furniture.

There were violent tantrums and even attacks on his bandmates. At one point, he threatened to stab bassist Gary Beers with a knife he’d brought into the studio. This change in behavior coincided with the band’s fall from popularity.

It ended with Hutchence’s suicide in a hotel room in 1997.
