Groggy after the stupid switch to daily saving time? Yeah me, too. Maybe this week’s Five Songs list will help reset the circadian rhythms.
1. DoFlame, Drunk Talk
BENT (Blue Grape Music)
Recommended If You Like: The space between hip-hop and NIN
You know how you feel in those moments when you stumble on a new song that has you stop and look at the speakers thinking “What is THIS?” That’s the reaction I had to this track from DoFlame (real name: Mateo Naranjo), a Toronto hardcore type who has a sophomore album. The song is about an unnamed Toronto neighbourhood that wasn’t the nicest place to grow up. Definitely worth a couple of listens this week.
2. Disturbed, I Will Not Break
Single (Mother Culture Records/Q Prime)
RIYL: Intensity
Disturbed as gone indie with their own label and is introducing this phase of their career with a standalone single, their first new music since the Divisive album in 2022. This leads into the group’s “Sickness 25th Anniversary Tour” that began late last month. Expect two sets with the first devoted to The Sickness and the second to the band’s biggest hits and any new music.
3. The Cure, All I Ever Am
Songs of a Lost World (Fiction)
RIYL: Well, it’s The Cure, innit?
There were audible gasps at the Brit Awards earlier this month when Songs of a Last World—The Cure’s greatest album since Disintegration—was shut out in favour of acts like Charlie XCX. Unacceptable. Songs of a Lost World is a masterpiece of gloom. This new single is further proof.
4. Jeremy Albino, Struggling with the Bottle
Out Time in the Sun (Easy Eye Sound)
RIYL: Alcoholism
Jeremy is a roots rocker from Scarborough who impressed Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys enough to convince him to produce this album. Albino has recently been on the road with Adrian Queseda of Black Pumas, Nathaniel Rateliff, and, of course, The Black Keys. Pay attention to this guy.
5. Myles Smith, Nice to Meet You
A Minute… (RCA)
RIYL: Mumford, Lumineers, Judah & The Lion
Myles is a British singer-songwriter in the mold of Michael Kiwanuka has been studying certain elements of the American country scene. In fact, a version of this song (taken from his second EP) featuring country singer Lainey Wilson has been released. You’re hankering for some violin, give this one a shot.
