The volume of music submissions is starting to increase as we get deeper into 2025. This week’s Five Songs list covers everything from a groovy-sounding Black Keys to something metal inspired by classic Indian cooking.
1. The Black Keys, The Night Before
Single (Warner)
Recommended If You Like: Well, it’s the Black Keys, innit?
After canceling a tour last year are setting the table for a completely different type of tour in 2025 called “No Rain No Flowers.: That includes this “loose and groovy” track. The video might make you wonder about what happens in your hotel room when you’re not there.
2. Fake Shark, Bang Bang Bang
Single (Light Organ Records)
RIYL: Whatever they’re drinking in Vancouver
Vancouver’s Fake Shark knows what it’s like to be judged. This track is (in the band’s words) “about knowing you’re being talked about behind your back. It’s a helpless feeling, but also kind of freeing. You can find out who are your real people, so in this sense, it’s not a sad song, it’s a positive party song.”
3. Lumineers, Same Old Song
Automatic (Dualtone)
RIYL: Melodic Alt-Rock
Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites have been mostly quiet since 2022, but now fans are getting ready for the new album (their fifth) this Friday. The band says the new album “explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, like the increasingly blurry line between what’s real and what’s not, and the variety of ways we numb ourselves while trying to combat both boredom and overstimulation.” Note the VHS style of the video.
4. Dean Wareham, That’s the Price of Loving Me
That’s the Price of Loving Me (Independent)
RIYL: Late 80s/early 90s lofi
Longtime lofi fans will remember Dean as the driving force behind the bands Galaxie 500 and Luna about 35 years ago. If you haven’t read his book on his life in indie rock, I highly recommend checking out Black Postcards. It sounds like this album will make for some dreamy listening—perfect for a February night.
5. Bloodywood, Tadka
Nu Delhi (Fearless Records)
RIYL: A good vindaloo
I love Indian food. Now the country’s nu-metal stars Bollywood have issued this single that celebrates Indian cuisine. “Tadka” refers to the cooking process where spices are heated in hot hold or ghee to bring out aromatic flavours. (I’m getting hungry just writing this). Their second album, Nu Deli (LOVE that!) will be out March 21.
