New Music Friday: 7 releases for your weekend (17 Jan 2025)

January is always a little light when it comes to albums on New Music Friday because the month tends to be devoted to advance singles of new albums set for release in the coming weeks. That being said, there are a couple of albums among the singles this week.

Singles

1. Coheed and Cambria, Someone Who Can (Virgin)

C&C have been around for about twenty years, providing fans of sci-fi and comic books music that’s quite unlike anything else. Leader Claudio Sanchez has an amazing imagination that has produced conceptual story arcs that stretch over multiple albums. This upcoming record called The Father of Make Believe (due March 14) is not part of The Amory Wars series but is the third installment in (“Act III) of the Vaxis story. Yeah, it’s a lot–but their fans love them for it.

2. Envy of None, Stygian Wavz (Kscope)

A couple of years back, Alex Lifeson of Rush teamed up with bassist/producer Andy Curran (Coney Hatch, etc.), vocalist Maiah Wynne, and producer/keyboardist Alfio Annibalini for a self-titled debut album that had all kinds of interesting depth. A second album, Stygian Wavz, has just been announced for released on March 14. The title track was apparently a big favourite of all four members. I can see why.

3. Miki Berenyi Trio, 8th Deadly Sin (Bella Union)

Shoegaze fans will remember Miki as one of the two frontpeople of Lush back in the early-to-mid 1990s. Her next step is this trio (“MB3” for short) who will release a debut entitled Tripla (Hungrarian for “three”) on April 4. Shoegaze and dream pop live!

4. Swervedriver, Volume Control (Dangerbird)

And since we’re into the fuzzy stuff, here’s the first new music from Swervedriver in about five years. A new EP called The World’s Fair is coming in in March. It was recorded with Mark Gardener of Ride along with Rick Beato and TJ Doherty.

5. Mumford & Sons, Rushmere (Glassnote)

It’s been seven years since M&S released an album (Delta in 2018). Rushmere, I’m told, is a pond located on Wimbledon Common in the southwest of London. This is where the band first hung out and plotted about putting a band together. The album will arrive on March 28,

Albums

1. Delivery, Force Majeure (Heavenly Recordings)

Australia is having something of a moment again with a parade of new bands following in the success of Amyl and the Sniffers. Delivery is another garage-punk band (they’re from Melbourne) who have just released their second album. Definitely worth a stream.

2. The Weather Station, Humanhood (Next Door/Fat Possum)

Tamara Lindeman and her Montreal crew have been on the bubble of Something Great through six quality albums. Their seventh–the first since 2021–should be the one that makes this band a household name, not just in Canada but internationally. Rolling Stone has given the album four stars, saying that Lindeman is “dangerously close to making the 2020s version of Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark. That’s awfully high praise. See if you agree.
