There’s quite a bit to talk about this week’s New Music Friday with new singles from some big names and an interesting array of new albums, also from some well-known artists.
Singles
1. Green Day, Bobby Sox (Warner)
Yet another single from the Saviors album went to radio this past week. Bobby Sox is a follow-up to Dilemma, which went to #1 on the alt-rock radio chart. Green Day continues their sold-out world tour, too, so with that in mind, here’s a live version of the new single from a gig in Atlanta.
2. Franz Ferdinand, Audacious (Domino)
It sounds like FF leader Alex Kapranos had something of an existential crisis when he wrote this song. “It’s about having an audacious response when you feel the fabric of existence come undone around you. Being bold, contrary. Peering over the edge into the eternity of non-existence and saying Aye! F**k it! Not today thank you!” A new album, The Human Fear, is due in January.
3. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Call Me (Whatever You Like) (Stax/Fantasy/Concord)
Here’s another follow-up single that was delivered to radio this week. The first single from the South of Here (the band’s fourth album) also hit #1 on a few charts in the US. These guys may be the closest thing we’ve seen to The Band in decades.
4. Texas King, Hook Me Up (Frontside)
Despite their name, Texas King is actually from London, Ontario, and have been road dogs for years. This a brand-new single and a sign of where they’re headed since the release of last year’s Capsize EP. Maybe you’ve seen the Spotify and Amazon Music billboards for these guys in downtown Toronto.
5. Beabadoobee, Beaches (Dirty Hit)
The woman with the funnest name in all of music is off to a great start with this track with millions of global streams. It will bring back the feels of early 2000s upbeat indie rock.
6. The Linda Lindas, No Obligation (Epitaph)
No one in the band is old enough to go into a liquor store and I don’t think anyone has a driver’s license yet, but The Linda Lindas are already onto their second album after spending the summer touring with bands like Green Day. This is the title track of that album which is set for release on October 11. Jeezus, they’re good.
Albums
1. Dear Rouge, Lonesome High (Pheromone Recordings)
I first encountered Vancouver’s Dear Rouge at a musicians boot camp up in the BC Rockies, so it’s been fun to watch their career develop. They’re now up to their fourth album and continue to headline shows across the country.
2. The Jesus Lizard, Rack (Ipecac Recordings)
These 90s noise legends (and favourites of Kurt Cobain) have been AWOL for 26 years, so it’s nice to have them back. The reason for the hiatus is a breakup in 1998 that was interrupted by a 2009 tour that ended quickly. This current reunion began in 2017 without any plans to make a record, but when singer David Yow heard the demos the other people in the band were sending him, he relented. This is the result.
3. Bill Leeb, Model Kollapse (Metropolis)
If you’re into the Canadian industrial scene, you’ll know Bill Leeb from Front Line Assembly and the softer Delerium. This is debut solo album. This is electro-industrial goodness.
4. London Grammar, The Greatest Love (Ministry of Sound)
London Grammar is another one of those indie darling bands who have come out of the UK over the last decade or so. This is their fourth album. Need to chill? Put this on.
5. Snow Patrol, The Forest is the Path (Republic)
Snow Patrol fans have been waiting six years for this record. If you’re looking for something very honest and very vulnerable, this is the record for you this weekend. After moving to the countryside to work on new music, this lead single came together in less than a day.
