Ongoing History Daily: The hitchhiker who helped create the Foo Fighters

After Kurt Cobain died, Davie Grohl was so devastated that he didn’t know if he’d ever make music again. He left the US to clear his head, ending up in rural Ireland.

One day, he was driving his rental car down some rural road in West Ireland in the rain when he saw a hitchhiker in the middle of nowhere. Dave being Dave, decided to give the kid a ride. Pulling over, he saw the hitchhiker wearing a Kurt Cobain t-shirt.

It was then that Dave realized that he couldn’t outrun what Nirvana had become and that he needed to get back into music and start over. That was the real beginning of the Foo Fighters. As for the hitchhiker, we now know his name was Lorcan Dunne.

Who knows what might have happened with Dave’s music career had he not gone for a drive that day?
