As we move more and more into the digital age and as more people get used to downloading and streaming the music they whenever and wherever the spirit moves them, it seems a little silly that the recording industry recently contemplated another physical format. No, seriously.
Back in 2008, the major labels along with Wal-Mart and Best Buy wanted to start selling music pre-recorded on microSD cards. You know those thumbnail-sized flash memory things that you might have in your digital camera? They called it “slotMusic.” Why? Well, the reasoning goes that many cell phones came equipped with a slot for a microSD card, so why not make music available for them that way?
Nope. Didn’t work, especially since the iPhone never used removable memory. The only physical music formats we care about are still CDs and vinyl.
